" . . . [W]hen you give to others or give of yourself to meaningful causes, things change. You expect more of yourself. You discover new feelings of self-worth. Indeed, you begin to tap into your true gifts and talents. And when you do that, you can achieve your full potential as you help yourself and others." - from The Power of Giving: How Giving Back Enriches Us All by Azim Jamal & Harvey McKinnon (New York: Penguin, 2009)
When you think of helping people this summer, think of the many children for whom summer vacation means hunger. Without school to provide them with lunch and, in many instances, breakfast, these children will have little, if any, food during their day, and what they do receive will most likely not be nutritious.
Thanks to organizations like Second Harvest Food Bank of North Central Ohio, which serves the counties of Crawford, Erie, Huron, and Lorain, children (and adults) at risk for hunger can receive the food they need. You can help this organization and others like it by sponsoring food drives, items for which you can buy for very little using coupons. According to Second Harvest's Food Drive Manual, the six most needed food items are cereal, peanut butter, canned vegetables, canned tuna fish, canned soup, and canned beef stew.
