Happy Holidays everybody! I hope you were able to get your hands on some awesome presents! Of course, what constitutes awesome varies a bit from person to person. Personally, I got a new Kindle Paperwhite for Christmas and cannot wait to start downloading free books for it from the library! The library’s “Downloadables” page is an awesome place if you have a new eReader, tablet, mp3 player, phone, etc. You can get helpful tips and guidance as well as have access to thousands of free books and songs!
MOVIES!
I finally was able to get a chance to watch the newest James Bond movie, Skyfall, a few days ago. Judging by the fact the movie is well on its way past grossing over one billion dollars internationally, I’m one of the last people to finally getting around to doing so… Regardless, I am a huge James Bond fan. I have seen every movie, from Dr. No to On Her Majesty’s Secret Service to Live and Let Die to The Living Daylights to Tomorrow Never Dies to Quantum of Solace.(did you notice that I included one movie for every different Bond actor: Sean Connery, George Lazenby, Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton, Pierce Brosnan, and Daniel Craig? If so, GOOD JOB!) I've played my fair share of Bond video games, read a few 007 books, and even made and starred in my own homemade James Bond films! (Yeah, right! Like I’d really link you to that!) Needless to say, Skyfall didn't really have to do much to make me like it and boy did it deliver anyway! Daniel Craig is really moving up the list of my favorite Bond portrayers.
In other movie news, this is a pretty big month when it comes to books being adapted to movies. The one with the most notoriety is obviously the first installment of The Hobbit, which was released a few days ago. I read the book a long time ago, seen/acted in the play and have also watched the cartoon version of it a few hundred times. It will be interesting to see what Peter Jackson does with it, especially since he’s breaking it up into three parts.
Also recently released, The Life of Pi, is receiving less attention than The Hobbit, but the reviews have been quite favorable. Already nominated for three golden globes, this movie based on the book of the same title by Yann Martel tells the story of a young man’s struggle for survival adrift on the Pacific Ocean as a castaway with a Bengal tiger keeping him company.
Finally, as DreamWeaver mentioned a few weeks ago, Rise of the Guardians is yet another book-inspired movie that is currently at the cinemas. This series covers the struggle between the Guardians (Santa Clause, Tooth Fairy, Easter Bunny, Sandman, Man in the Moon etc.) and the evil Pitch Black and his minions the Fearlings, who are trying to steal children's dreams and replace them with nightmares. Like DreamWeaver, I too can personally vouch for this series even though it's geared toward younger readers. I've read them all and they are very entertaining!
Oh yeah…Twilight Saga Breaking Dawn Part II is still out there, which I suppose is based on Stephanie Meyer's book, but I can vouch for neither the film nor the books... However if anyone asks, I am definitely team Jacob.
