Is it 1984 in 2013?

Is it any wonder that Amazon Sales of George Orwell's 1984 Shot Up 7,000% this week?

In the aftermath of recent revelations concerning a top secret government surveillance program aimed at monitoring the personal and private interactions of mostly innocent civilians, many Americans are naturally concerned with what the future might hold for a country being run by an All-Seeing Eye. Or have we all just been hypnotized into brain-dead apathy and empty, materialistic desires?

Other totalitarian classics that are seeing a recent revival include Brave New World by Aldous Huxley and Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury.

Philip K. Dick also wrote a large number of short stories where vast conspiracies were employed (usually by an oppressive government or other hostile powers) to keep common people under control or enforce a given agenda.(ie. A Scanner Darkly, The Penultimate Truth). Other popular science fiction writers whose work famously features governmental conspiracy theories include William Gibson, John Twelve Hawks, Eric Frank Russell, Margaret Atwood and Neal Stephenson...
