Music Musings's blog
Confession time: I love William Shatner. I love him in Star Trek; I love his cameos on sit-coms; I love him in those Priceline commercials. He's just very funny! So, imagine my excitement when I found that there is an album of Shatner performing classic songs like "Rocket Man", "Bohemian Rhapsody", and "Iron Man". Needless to say, I checked it out and have been listing to these awesome tunes all weekend. It's a two-disc set, as well, which just makes things better and better! Obviously, I couldn't let the opportunity pass to make this our next Artist of the Week.
I know generally speaking, the Artist of the Week should really focus on just one artist. But, when it came time to choosing a band for this post, I was torn between two. And when I started reading into the band biographies a bit more, I realized that the two bands both happened to be European metal bands. So, instead of just choosing one band of the two, I'm going to be focusing on the concept of European metal bands, specifically my two favorites: Sabaton and Sonata Arctica.
So far, our Artists of the Week have mostly focused on Rock groups, with a short deviation into classic show tunes with Michael Crawford. Today, we're going to check out one of the genres on the other side of the Popular Materials desk: Gospel.
It's been pretty cold today. Especially after the bright and warm weekend we just had, today seemed pretty bleak and depressing. At least, I thought so. There's something that happens in mid-winter every year. The cold and the lack of sunlight leaves me feeling a bit depressed. I need something to break me out of this winter funk. And I think I might have found just the right artist. If you're in the same boat as me, I suggest checking out our next artist of the week: Mika!
I love musicals! There's something about a story set to music that always resonsates with me. Whether I'm watching a live or recorded performance, or just listening to a CD in my car, I am always in the mood for show tunes. This wasn't always the case, however. For a long time, I ignored this wonderful genre of music for several reasons, the biggest being that my friends considered them uncool. Then, in 8th grade, I happened to listen to just a few songs from The Phantom of the Opera...and I've been hooked ever since.
Merry Christmas, everyone! I have some good news (perhaps you could even say it was a little holiday surprise, if a few days early). Westlake Library is providing even more ways for you to get access to the music you love, with no expense to you! I'm sure that most of you are familiar with our Freegal program, which allows 3 free music downloads a week (no strings attached, no hidden fees, just your library card; and the downloads are yours to keep!) Well, we have found a way to make an awesome deal like that even better!
Hello, everyone! Welcome to the second installment of Artist of the Week! I'm hoping to make this an ongoing series of good music and new favorites. This past weekend, I picked up several new CDs with the hope of finding our selection for this week. Sadly, I've been a bit busy, and didn't have the chance to listen to anything yet. So, instead, I thought we could go with a tried and true favorite of mine: They Might be Giants!
