Facebook Messages: Beware!

Given how much time many people spend on Facebook, it would be really convenient to be able to send and receive email from one's account. Facebook has announced an update to its messaging system to allow precisely that. with so many times when Facebook adds new functionality, it comes with a heaping helping of scary.

Here are a few of awful details:

  • You cannot delete messages. Ever.
  • Anyone you email using your facebook email address instantly becomes your friend and has full access to everything you've posted. So, when choosing who to email via Facebook, like that knight in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade said, "Choose wisely." Don't email your boss if you've trashed him or her in your feed.
  • Because there are no subject lines, all communications with one person get lumped together, making finding important messages on a particular topic difficult to the extreme.

If all of this isn't enough, the new messaging system might be susceptible to use by spammers.

It is important that you understand your Facebook security settings and set them so that you are protected.
