The Sports Section - Save the Date

Since enough gets written and said about our local professional teams, I want to focus again on Cleveland's local sports scene and some upcoming events in 2014 that already have sports fans talking.
Coming in February is the first-round play of Fed Cup, a premier team competition in women's tennis. The equivalent of the men's Davis Cup tournament, the Fed Cup features some of the top women tennis players in the world, playing for their home countries.  The 2014 tournament will feature first-round action here in Cleveland on February 8 and 9.  Matches will be played at the Public Auditorium between the USA and Italy, with Serena Williams and Sloane Stephens leading Team USA.  Click here for further information:
Cleveland's long tradition of hosting collegiate competitions continues in 2014.  Here's a brief look at what's coming up.
2/28 - 3/1 - 2014 Big Ten Indoor Track & Field Championships (Spire Institute, Geneva)
3/12 - 3/15 - 2014 NCAA Division II Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving (Spires)
3/14 - 3/15 - 2014 NCAA Division II Wrestling National Championships (Public Hall)
4/10 - 4/12 - 2014 NCAA National Collegiate Women's Bowling Championship (Wickliffe)
5/12 - 5/24 - MAC Baseball Tournament (All Pro Freight Stadium - Avon)
Professional golf is making its return to NE Ohio this summer.  The Cleveland Open, part of the Tour will be played right here in Westlake at Lakewood Country Club from June 2-8, 2014.  Those of you who follow golf know that there is no Q (qualifying) School anymore - golfers who make the big PGA Tour either have won a tournament or have come from the Tour.  Not only will fans see up-and-coming golfers vying for a PGA spot, but also a lot of pros who have lost their tour cards and are trying to get back on the PGA circuit.
As far as our beloved professional teams are concerned - we can continue to repeat our Cleveland sports fan's mantra - Wait 'til next year!
Coming up - highlights of the year in sports in 2013.
Looking ahead - Winter Olympics 2014 from Sochi, Russia.
