Robin Echols Cooper portrays the famed African American abolitionist, women's rights activist and evangelist Sojourner Truth.
February is Black History Month. To celebrate, Porter Public Library is proud to welcome Robin Echols Cooper with Women in History as she portrays Sojourner Truth.
Wearing era-appropriate clothing Cooper interprets the life of Truth, who was born into slavery in New York state. In 1826 she escaped to freedom with her infant daughter and two years later she successfully sued to win the freedom of her son, the first to do so against a white man. She later went on to deliver a famous speech in Akron, Ohio to the Ohio Women's Right Convention and during the American Civil War she helped to recruit Black soldiers for the U.S. Army.
