Each meet-up we'll watch a different documentary that provides a window into an area of society; with a discussion of the topics afterward.
Documentary films provide access to crucial information about cultural, social and historical issues that we might not otherwise be exposed to or are unable to experience firsthand.
As baseball season kicks off, we are taking this opportunity to look at the history of the sport through one of its wildest and underappreciated players - Dock Ellis.
Dock was often caught up in controversy on and off the field. His career started in the 1960s when professional baseball hadn't fully embraced racial equality. He was a natural and outspoken leader who lived the expression “Black is Beautiful” and advocated for players' rights, including the right to free agency.
His wildest moment happened on June 12, 1970, when he threw a no-hitter while on LSD. During his career, he won five National League Eastern Division titles in six years and won the World Series in 1971.
Dock would go on to work for decades counseling drug abusers, testifying before the US Senate about public health issues, and raising money for sickle cell research.
This program is intended for those 13 years old and up. Screening via Kanopy.
