Born Mary Ludwig, she followed the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War to fight against the British Army in North America.

Women in History Presents Molly Pitcher. Born Mary Ludwig in 1754 to German immigrant parents Mary grew up in a small modest house with her family. While in her early twenties she married a barber named William Hays. At the outbreak of the Revolutionary War, Hays enlisted in a Pennsylvania regiment. Mary's place in American history was solidified on June 28, 1778 at the Battle of Monmouth, where she carried water to overheated and wounded soldiers. When her husband was wounded Mary took his place at the cannon and began firing. Later General Washington asked who the woman was firing the cannon and he was told it was "Sergeant Molly."
